WE VALUE HISTORIC PRESERVATION

Here’s why!

What is Historic Preservation?

According to the National Park Service, “Historic preservation is a conversation with our past about our future…. Through historic preservation, we look at history in different ways, ask different questions of the past, and learn new things about our history and ourselves. Historic preservation is an important way for us to transmit our understanding of the past to future generations.

Reasons Historic Preservation makes a difference:

Maine has many historic properties that reflect the history & character of our amazing state. The variety of buildings of historic & architectural importance, as well as stone walls, bridges, open fields, & garden landscapes, distinguish Maine from other states & remind us of our past. Preserving these features ensures that community character is protected & that our heritage is preserved for us & future generations.

Maine Preservation

The preservation of [historic] downtown buildings & libraries can serve as a catalyst for economic development.

Maine Downtown Center

Preserving the history of Maine & its small communities through oral histories & physical artifacts gives a tangible connection between the current generation to generations past. Without this connection, young generations now & going forward will lose a sense of who we are as a people & what our ancestors struggled through to create our great state of Maine. Every region of Maine has its own stories to tell & lessons to pass on, from the largest cities to the smallest settlements.

At the heart of each revitalization lies a unique cultural heritage, one that’s inextricably linked to the historic buildings where people live, play, & work.”
